about the 34th Bundesliga round

Dortmund - Werder
Bremen 2 - 1 |
|
| |
Borussia
Dortmund coach Matthias Sammer was full of praise for 20-year-old Brazilian Ewerthon,
whose winner against Werder Bremen secured the Westfalian giants the Bundesliga
title and their first silverware in five years. "I
am very happy for Ewerthon," smiled Sammer. "He has scored so many important
goals for us, but lately he struggled a bit and I had to put him on the bench. "It
was certainly not easy to come on that late, but he responded just great." Dortmund
needed three points as Leverkusen and Bayern were beating Hertha Berlin and Hansa
Rostock respectively when Sammer threw in the youngster with 15 minutes left. Only
60 seconds after replacing Jorg Heinrich, the Brazilian raced clear at the far
post and reached Dede's cross from the left that had evaded Jan Koller in the
centre of goal. Ewerthon reached the ball with his right foot and struck it
against the inside of the post, before it finally rolled over the line. The
visitors, knowing that a win would guarantee them qualification for the Uefa Cup,
took a surprise lead on 17 minutes when Canada international Paul Stalteri played
a one-two with Ailton and beat Jens Lehmann from five yards. Dortmund
defender Christian Worns said: "Bremen pulled ten men behind the ball when
defending, but many of them went out for attack whenever we lost posession and
Ailton's pace was a constant threat to our rearguard." With
Dortmund getting increasingly nervous after Marcio Amoroso and Lars Ricken had
failed to find the net, Czech international Jan Koller finally equalised four
minutes before the interval. The
giant gained posession just outside the box and was desperately looking for a
team-mate, but with none of Dortmund's players in a position to receive, he tried
his luck and fired a low attempt towards goal which beat wrong-footed keeper Frank
Rost on the left post. Inspired
by the prospect of attacking towards their own south stand - with 27,000 fans
Europe's largest still existing Kop - the hosts increased the pressure after the
interval, but were unfortunate when the lively Otto Addo hit the side netting
on 50 minutes and the post eight minutes later. With
Dortmund now moving forward in great numbers, Bremen nearly punished them on the
break when Namibia international Razundara Tjikuzu went clean through on 71 minutes
but his chip over Lehmann bounced back from the crossbar. The
game swung to the other end and Ewerthon's strike gave the hosts the lead against
a demoralised Bremen which lost defender Mladen Krstajic due to a second yellow
card. Although Ewerthon missed
a sitter from only ten yards, the small Brazilian became the match-winner as Dortmund
held firm in the dying minutes. Bremen qualified for Uefa Cup. |

Dortmund's

Michael Ballack scored after ten minutes. Ballack continued his fine run of
form nd signed off in his last game for Leverkusen with another goal seven minutes
